Cardiac Risk Calcium Scoring

Our veins, arteries, blood vessels and heart keep our blood circulating and delivering nutrients to our cells. But when something goes wrong, the results can be life threatening. Three Rivers Medical Center uses a variety of current technologies and treatments to diagnose problems of the vascular system. The digital vascular imaging services is a big part of this process, and a vital part of finding potential vascular issues before they become problems.

Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) is the leading cause of death in the United States. When detected early, however, persons affected by CAD often have a better prognosis. At Three Rivers Medical Center, we utilize technology that can provide you with such early detection that can be life-saving. Cardiac Risk Calcium Scoring is a non-invasive, painless scanning technology that measures the amount of plaque buildup in the coronary arteries. The procedure, which usually takes less than 10 minutes to complete and costs only $99, can help predict heart disease in people who appear perfectly healthy. Patients pass through a CT scanner that produces images of the coronary arteries. These images are used to help detect the early stages of coronary heart disease

Who should consider having a Cardiac Risk Calcium Scoring?

A heart attack can strike anyone, regardless of age or level of fitness. There are risk factors; however, that may indicate a predisposition to heart disease. If you are over 40 years of age with one or more of the following risk factors, Cardiac Risk Calcium Scoring might benefit you:

  • Family history of early heart disease, heart attack or stroke
  • High cholesterol levels
  • High blood pressure
  • Diabetes
  • Smoking
  • Obesity and/or prolonged inactivity
  • Stress

Persons with documented coronary artery disease should not consider Cardiac Risk Calcium Scoring.
